Whitening gels work in two ways. They can contain a bleaching agent which removes the stains on the enamel and some of the enamel with it. Or it can be an ingredient that is not necessarily a bleaching agent, but does remove some of the surface stains. All whitening gels, whether at home or at the dentist, can have side effects if used to the extreme.

Effects of Gels

Whitening gels do what they claim, although sometimes it can come at a price. Sometimes, in certain individuals, they can cause dental problems by wearing away of the tooth enamel.

Functions of Gels

Gels contain bleaching ingredients that change the natural color of teeth. There are some that work on removing surface stains so the natural color appears brighter.

Warnings

Whitening gels may cause tooth sensitivity. This can make it uneasy or even painful when eating or drinking cold and hot substances. If you are using a gel that removes some of the enamel with the stains, then you could possibly experience a bit of enamel loss. This can result in the teeth becoming weak causing decay,breakage and possibly tooth loss.
